The Dr. James Robert Troutt and Mary Katherine Troutt Humanitarian Scholarship was established by the Troutt family to help worth college students accomplish their goal of benefiting mankind. Meet this year’s recipient of Dr. James Robert Troutt and Mary Katherine Troutt Humanitarian Scholarship, Austin Hamlett.
Austin Hamlett is completing his sophomore year at Union University in Jackson, TN. He is finishing his last semester before entering Nursing School. He has been passionate about entering the medical field since he was a student at Gallatin High School and was active in the Health Occupations Students of American (HOSA) organization. He will be seeking a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.
Austin served as a Clinical Intern at Sumner Regional Medical Center when he was a student at Volunteer State Community College in 2015. During this time, he was able to shadow medical professionals in diagnostic medicine and to observe imaging procedures such as X-rays, MRI’s, and Nuclear Medicine. Currently he is participating in his fraternity’s philanthropy efforts by traveling to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis to donate blood twice a month. His fraternity (ATO) holds events annually that raise thousands of dollars for the hospital through campus and community efforts.
During the summer of 2016, Austin served as a counselor at the SpringHill Christian Summer Camp in Evart, Michigan, where he worked with middle school-age boys in fun activities and in maturing their faith. He is looking forward to some opportunities to go on medical mission trips as he begins his nursing studies. He has served in several student organizations at the university, including the Student Government Association, the Student Nursing Association, the Student Activities Council, and he is a University Relations Ambassador.
